I did watch the video newshound and hence my question.

I guess I should have done a google search on "tomizawa astroturf" earlier.

it returned this:

so it seems the green stuff in the video is astroturf or something of a less grippy nature.

Yes, I agree it would have been a minor accident had he not been hit (run over in the proper sense) by the following riders. He would not have been flung into their paths in the absence of the "astroturf".

so, newshound, im sorry but its back to crash investigation "skool" for you.
