I agree, he SHOULD have warned you...... but....

Your view is being too simplistic, a contract has been formed between you and, depending on what YOU said in the 'advert', you have 'duties' to perform to the buyer. If you have said anything like 'the car is in good condition', it is not THAT awful of the bloke to want to check your claim.

Still, I think he SHOULD have told you what he planned to do, first.
