you are right - although there is little way of knowing what effect the impact had on his brakes - I dont think there are many drivers that want to be collected by oncoming cars - Nico did well to limit the impact.
When you spin braking helps the direction of the vehicle but staying on the brakes can cause further trouble - after impact most crashes you will become a passenger - Jenson did a good example of control braking in a spin later on in the race, but didnt hit anything.
Also they will let go of the steering wheel in a shunt to save losing their thumbs.
