Trouble is they used to have university for those types of people, it was called an apprenticeship. They would thus learn a single trade hands on, which isn't too hard even for the bluntest knife in the box.
I was jealous of all these guys at Tech when I was at college because they could all afford new motorbikes, when I had a succession of knackers.
In France they still have a similar system, at 14 the kids are sorted and only the truly academic go on to College and university, the rest are funnelled into vocational training and so by 18 they can support themselves, in theory, but that's another story.
