I am 52 years of age, I have worked every single day of my life since I left school at 16. I have gone to war for my country and I see soldiers being killed and maimed every single day in a foreign country. I have paid taxes and NI on every single penny I have earned. I feel I am qualified to have an opinion on how my taxes are spent. I did not vote for LD because I disagree with a lot of their policies. Unfortunately for students, the biggest majority of people agreed and voted accordingly.

When this country is up to its neck in debt, local governments are talking of redundancy for lots of staff to balance the books, homeless people are starving/freezing on the street corners. Tell me why I should feel any great sympathy for students who are going out on protests, causing damage to property and people when ultimately, our taxes will have to pay for the repairs/medical cover and benefits until they can work again.

I watched the news, I saw the protestor (I wont call him a student) with the rock on a rope smashing the window. Of course every well prepared student carries one of them in his back pocket. Did you see the person sat on the windowsill to the side of him with the video camera on his shoulder filming him. Is that a normal student thing to do, or was he maybe on a media degree course and this was going to be part of his course work.

When I left school my friends who went to university, went there with the expectation that their degree would allow them to earn a very good wage once they qualified. That was the reason for going there, thats why their parents scrimped and saved to give them that chance.

Like most things nowadays, young people seem to think its their divine right to have everything they want regardless of who will have to pay for it. Why should I pay high taxes just so that a student can go to university and get a degree in a subject which is so obscure that he is never going to get a job using that knowledge.

Student loans dont have to be paid back until you earn over a certain threshold and I would argue that if you have got a degree and dont earn that minimum amount within the first couple of years, then what was the point of getting a degree.

I agree that what I would call core professions such as Medicine/Engineering/Education students should get assistance with their fees and I believe that many of them can get bursaries to help them. But why should someone who is going to end up stacking shelves in Tesco because no one wants the skills he has spent three years learning, expect us to feel sympathy because he may have to pay a bit more.

As to the Police tactics, when the first protest started, they took it easy, got caught out and were criticised for poor policing. So they responded with tougher tactics and now students and police are being hurt, but the policeman would not be getting hurt if the student was not there. The student has choosen to go there and maybe for some this is the first time that real life has smacked them in the face. The police are human, they hurt when they get smacked in the face with a brick, it doesn't matter why the brick was thrown, it still hurts. If you are stupid enough to think that a horse galloping towards you is going to stop at the last moment, good luck, you are going to need it. just remember that our police riot tactics have been honed from lessons learnt in Belfast over 30 years. Just be thankful they are not using rubber bullets and water cannons yet. They are being quite restrained.
