Well I stand corrected if this is indeed the case. I believe that totally wrong is a little over the top! Everything I have stated is correct other than where gravity actually comes from which I freely admit I do not know.

I refer to gravity as a constant acceleration which works pretty well in vehicle dynamics!

Please divulge further, how do you derive constant (for arguments sake call it constant) gravitational acceleration from the formulae to determine gravitational force?

If force is dependent upon mass and distance, and acceleration is dependent upon mass and force, if mass is constant (if you are talking about one single object) then the only variable is the distance between the two objects?

To put it into the perspective that the wool in-between my ears can understand, take two objects, myself and the earth. I weigh in at a whopping 100 kg, the earth (according to Google) weighs 5.9742*10^24 kg. Place me 1 metre above the earth and the force pulling myself and the earth together would be:

((100 kg + 5.9742*10^24 kg) / 1 m) * 6.673 * 10^-11 = 39 * 10^15 N = 39 PETA Newtons?

If I try running the same calculation but taking the distance from the centre point of the earth (earths radius according to Google is 6378.1 km) this would give me over 6 giga newtons.

((100 kg + 5.9742*10^24 kg) / 6378100 m + 1 m) * 6.673 * 10^-11 = 6 * 10^9 N

Is this correct?!

If so, if I were to drop from that 1m height, I have my constant mass, I have the force of attraction between myself and the earth so my acceleration:

a = F/m, therefore at a minimum a = 6 * 10^9/100 = 60000000 m/s^2

If I was one metre above the earth accelerating at that rate I would get there pretty damn quickly!

Either: I am wrong, you are wrong or I am missing quite a crucial step. I would welcome you filling the gaps in my knowledge that I am missing.

I look forward to your next modest answer!

Chris
