Realistically, there is currently no viable alternative to nuclear power ie an energy source that compared to fossil fuels is virtually limitless. We can bluster on about green alternatives all we like, but the fact is that (with an expected World population explosion) we will 'soon' run out of energy options. The choice will then be: nuclear power or fighting and freezing in the dark. Trouble is, the nuclear option takes decades to build and develop, so Lord help those who stick their heads in the sand.
Some more forward-thinking nations (eg France & Japan) built many nuclear stations a long time ago. France now exports power to Britain and indeed owns a large chunk of our power sector.

In my opinion it is already too late. By the time all the arguing about location and the political implications of the technology are resolved we will be years behind.
I might even start up a company manufacturing string and wax.......
