To Alfie and the others... the base argument in Northern Ireland was frighteningly similar to this. 'Disaffected' unemployed young people began causing trouble. The riots and looting resulted in the army being sent in. Initially the community at large were in support of this. When British soldiers started killing these people during 1971 and 1972, it ignited a guerilla war that lasted for over 30 years and led to 3,500 deaths.
Yes these kids in London should not be roaming the streets and causing trouble, but it needs a measured response. If you order the army or the police to open fire on them with live rounds, you will awaken a monster the like of which you've never seen. Believe me, you don't want that.
The crap that's happening now will blow over in a few days and the gangs and thugs will go back to what they were doing before - attacking one another - which is probably the best thing all round.
