Like Brian, I am old. However, that gives me the chance to look back. There's not BEEN a time when people haven't said... 'everything is going to hell!'..... and there've hardly been ANY times when 'now' is ACTUALLY worse than yesterday.

Look back to the Romans, they were bemoaning their awful children and 'young people'. 'O tempora, o mores'. That's continued throughout history.... and are we in hell yet?

What really happens is that people forget the good things that have come with the changing years and only comment about the bad stuff. Margaret's death made me re-visit my memories of quite how APPALLING life was BEFORE her.... Yes there ARE more cars, polution, 'foreigners' (etc., etc.) now BUT there was also more racism, more strife beteen the classes, more sexism, more strikes, more 'blackballing' in 'clubs'... the list is ENDLESS. I loved the 1970s and 80s but that's becasue I was young! Life was pretty tatty! When I started as an Estate agent in 1976, I was NOT allowed to take the 'wife's' salary into account when applying for mortages.... how's that sound....?

Here's a quick test to see if 'now' is worse than 'then'... you should be able to use this test thoughout your life...

In 1940/1, Hitler was bombing London; men of your age were being conscripted into the army, 6 million Jews were about to be murdered, 55,000 British young men (like you) were about to die bombing Germany, at least 80,000 were lost at sea, food was starting to be rationed and MILLIONS were starting to die through war..... are you SURE that it's worse for you TODAY....?

Then think about the battles in the treches in 1914/18....

Life is always tough.... but, hopefully, life will continue to be BETTER than it was for most of the previous generations.

Have some HOPE!
