If you're going for stats only on this argument the only relative stats are surely those of the pike peak event. It's held once a year over a couple of days and it has no margin for error.

A failure or mistake could send you 2000 meters down but somehow only a couple of deaths have been recorded in the entire history of that event. Worth checking to clarify.
