My take on it was that Uncle Ron thought that Magnussens backers had a lot of money behind them, but when the music stopped Magnussens backers didn't come up with the funds & Ron was left without a chair to sit on. But Ron is still hedging his bets thus Magnussen is the reserve driver until they raise enough to buy out the Saudi family so he can continue his power crazed ego trip
