Wheel on wheel accidents are nasty - I had one guy flick up onto my kart, his rear wheels still spinnning. His rear left drove down my right leg, pulled my overalls clean up my leg, tore the hair off my leg and I was left with a burn covered with about a Cm of rubber down my leg. Still got a bald patch even now, makes for a good bit of story telling though when people see it!
I would refuse to drive a 'proper' kart if it had wrap around bumpers. If F1 cars manage to go open wheel at 220mph.. then karts can manage with uncovered wheels!
