An insight to my experience.

You may remember a few months ago I sought advice in this very chat channel on HD TV's etc.

Eventually blew my original budget of a 50" Panasonic and went for a Pioneer KRP 500.

Pretty much benchmark domestic level so I was expecting stunning results.

The Pioneer came with a Free sat Tuner built in and was totally gobsmacked by the quality on BBC HD. It was totally breath taking.

The SD quality was VERY VERY good on my Sky 5yr old Pace tuner.

Had Sky+ HD installed a week later, Missed all the deals they were doing (but that were my fault for dithering) and........

.... I WAS DEVASTATED! The SD quality was rubbish and the HD was no where near as good as my original SD via my Pace Sky Tuner.

I Backed to backed them and the New Sky Tuner on HDMI was very poor.

The Old Pace SD box was much much better via a scart lead than the SD channels on the new HD box.

What’s more, the quality of my Pioneer Free sat viewing had also degraded.

Placed a recall with sky and a special HD service engineer came out.

I explained my situation and demoed the Old Pace and my Pioneer free sat box to him.

He totally agreed and went to his van and brought me out a new HD Box. Plugged it in and set it up.

The difference was like chalk and cheese.

He explained that I had been spoilt but the PACE and Pioneer Tuners. The Pioneer Processer was far superior to anything you would get in subsidised Sky Box.

He explained that My Original SKY HD was made by Samsung and was NOT a good quality tuner.

The new Tuner which looked identical was made by Amstrad, which SKY have now acquired to make their own boxes.

This Amstrad tuner had a much better process inside.

Also he said that if I wanted to improve the quality even further, I should buy a better quality LNB than the one SKY installed with the new HD Install as again, this was to inferior for my TV system. It also explains why I found a drop off in quality on my Pioneer Free Sat Box as I pick up a spare LNB output for it.

The engineer was was very good as was the advice. Sky customer services were also very good and I am 99% happy now compared to 0% happy with the 1st HD install.

If you want to exploit the HD quality of your system I would suggest you insist on the Amstrad SKY+ HD box for your install. Don’t let the Samsung Sky+ HD box any where near your AV Rack.
