It is indeed a difficult problem. I don't think MP's should be paid £150k although accept that their salary should reflect the inherent insecurity of their job. As you state, the public would never allow £150k salaries for MP's.
I really do feel the nature of the "job" and the problem of pay is at the root of the political mess deomcracies all reduce to. MP's should stand on principals and issues and if elected, support those same principals and issues. As it stands now, they cannot do this since it would most likely result in the loss of an election and therefore their job. Instead, they pander to populists views and all end up sounding the same.
