Just because he has taken a back seat doesn't mean he doesn't know what's going on in the team.

If the FIA and Max insist on having a grudge against Maclaren then it puts anybody who is in the team in the firing line but Ron has now distanced himself so the FIA and Max can't do anything to him. Max will be seething that he can't touch him, can't make him beg for forgiveness, apologise and can't basically belittle him anymore.

Ron is looking after his own interests so good on him because if the Maclaren F1 team were banned then what does Ron have to fall back on?

Ron obviously hates being away from F1 but when you have morons like Mad Max calling the shots then it's best for him to stay away.
