Good advice from Andrewrr. Not many people have a SATA/IDE-USB cable though. If you don't, stick in a Linux LiveCD (Ubuntu or similar) and access your data that way. You could even install anti-virus software and fix it in place.
If it does turn out to be virus related (or corruption), since the operating system isn't found, after backing-up your data there would be the extra step of rebuilding the MBR.
As Andrewrr states however, don't let your "computer friend" touch it unless he really does know what he's doing. In most cases such as this, people almost always end up reinstalling the OS, losing data, settings, installed programs and anything else of importance in the process.
