I don't know where the comparison is with the current exchange rate, but it was definately the case at 1.5€ to the pound.
My view is because the welfare state is a step away from us we don't often get our faces rubbed in it.
But imagine there was no benefits system, a friend or neighbour falls on hard times and we are in a financial position to be able to help. After all you wouldn't stand by and watch your neighbours kids starve, would you. However, if, having handed them your hard earned, you saw the kids with new designer trainers or the whole family off to Alton Towers for the day etc. you would understandably feel agrieved, wouldn't you?
