I think motorsport, mechanical and automotive all study the same fundamentals, they are however applied in different ways. So Automotive and Motorsport will look at the dynamics of a coil spring, mechanical may look at something else.
As you're in Nottingham, Loughborough is supposed to be the top automotive engineering university. I went there and a graduate in that course would lack in a mechanical or motorsport engineering environment. Like many universities they have Formula Student where you can easily get involved in the design and manufacture of racing car.
In terms of which to consider i'd look at;
Loughborough Oxford Brookes Bath Hertfordshire
And Brunel for good luck.
