I think they have to do extreme events to keep their minds sharp, your mind is at its sharpest when it's on the edge so I think it is just part of their training. Playing on a PS3 will never be anywhere near as close to the real thing and I don't think you experience fear on a PS3. Fear is a big part of the brains decision making process so even though it's risky I think there has to be that element of risk to train their brains.
