Agreed. I'd also go a step further, especially with regards to violent crime, and amalgamate all the "lesser" crimes.
For instance, common assault, ABH, GBH etc are largely the same crime yet they are judged to be different dependant on the level of harm inflicted. The ONLY legal defence for any sort of violence should be self-defence. I would possibly go so far as to include the threat of violence and threatening behaviour amongst the same set.
The same is true of all the "theft" crimes and other sets of crimes that seem to depend upon chance, ability and other nonsensical factors. The crime isn't the result of your actions, it's the actions themselves.
