Could have something to do with the fact that those who make it in football are generally the best from their peer group/gene pool. In other words, anyone who is really good enough on the field might get a chance at the big time.
High level motorsport has more to do with who, how well connected and how wealthy your parents are, rather than how good a sports person the individual is.
Sad fact, because I hate football and love motorsport. But I sometimes wish now that I'd taken my kids to kick a ball on a Sunday rather than driving a kart, because if they had been as good relatively speaking in the world of football they could have progressed on the basis of their own merit.
