It's really quite simple.

The obscuring time disables the pickup for the nominated length of time.

So if you have a lap of 45 secs and three strips (which gives you 2 splits)then you have a choice.

If you want to record the split times set the unit to 2 splits and the obscuring time to less than the time between the bands. ie

If you dont want to record the splits, set the unit to 0 splits and the obscuring time to greater than the time to get past two of the bands in the ground.

As you leave the pits the first band will trigger your unit and then switch off the sensor for the allocated time, then the next band (which should be the first band you went over) will trigger the sensor again.
