Among the things that can make creat problems are:

Breaks in the wiring to the rev counter.

Noise on the rev counter wire if you run it alongside other wires though usually it is noise from the rev counter which interferes with separate temperature guages

Inadequate earthing of the engine if you use a power box system, like Formula Blue

No cores in the wire where it is connected to the unit. You end up with just a loop of insulation hooked into the box.

Battery voltage too low, or dirty contacts

Bent pins in the battery connector.
