Chris- you're supposed to clean them up and rinse them well BEFORE you put them in the oven. Next time instead of putting them in the oven, if you buy one of those single ring camping cookers (£9.99 from Halfords), put the crankcase on that instead, much quicker and you can do it outdoors. To get the baked on oil off, soak them in a container with petrol for a couple of hours then use a toothbrush on it. If that doesn't work,(it should) get some alloy wheel cleaner spray(halfords again) and give them a good spray and soak in that stuff, works wonders !!
