Hi and welcome to the forum!
We started at Daytona, with my lad in bambino at about 5/6, we even did some of their bambino races, after a few months we brought his him his own kart, so 6 years old. I had the exact same response from my wife...isn't it too soon!
The big differences once you get your own are as follows:

Assuming you have somewhere you can take him, practice become cheeper (in man-maths because we don't count consumables) and you get more of it!

Buy wisely and you'll still have good residual value, if he doesn't take to it.

The main thing is making sure you have somewhere to go and go first and have a good chat with other kids and dads
