With the tapered end of the piston facing to the left, the lip seals go in to the square slots with the lip part of the seal also facing the left. We boiled a kettle and got a mug of hot water to soften the seals before attempting to get them in to the grooves.
Place the spring with the black end in to the cylinder first, place a rag in to a vice and gently hold the master cylinder. Use red rubber grease on the seals when you insert the piston. Push down on the retaining cap to compress the spring (not easy!) and just try to find the start of the thread. Once started it goes in quite easily.
