Round 1 - 31st
March 2002 - Matchams Kart Circuit
Having resolved pre-season insurance negotiations, the first round of MKC's 2002 championship got underway on time on March 31st. The fine Bank Holiday weather of the previous two days, was replaced by drizzling rain for most of the meeting, providing tricky conditions throughout the heats. By finals time, the rain was gone and the drying track gave some superb close racing, to end the day on a high. Certainly Junior TKM winner David Sutcliffe thought so, as a best ever outing for him produced the final trophy and the Novice of the Day award.
Pole in the Cadet final went to Simon Verigotta, with James Colburn alongside, but it was Colburn who headed things from the first corner. Close up in 3rd came Michael Lindon, and these three opened a gap to the rest. In midfield one of the two WTP powered runners, Mark Estall, was making steady forward progress from his 5th row start. Lap 6 had yellow flags waving at turn one as a back marker was recovered by two helpers, but an unsighted Lindon slipped past Verigotta on the approach, which incurred a penalty that was to cost him the win. Colburn steadfastly held off Verigotta, to take his first ever top podium spot. Best of the Honda drivers was Lloyd Wallace in 5th overall.
Clive Jackson's move from Libre to Club Class didn't prevent him from his winning streak, as he took a flag to flag final win, having already won two heats out of three.
Young Darren Aldwell, reigning Prokart champion won three out of his four races as he alone coped with slippery conditions, whilst his adversaries suffered from lack of traction control.
Junior TKM pole starter Jonathan Birch led the final away but was closely stalked by David Sutcliffe for three laps. Sutcliffe's passing move at the exit from the hairpin belied his novice status, and Birch was neverable to get back on terms. Chris Mcloughlin followed these two to the flag, as champion Richard Pardon had a day to forget, one lap down in the final, and a 3rd in a heat his best result.
The Libre class was dominated by joint champion Duncan Hadley, who had a clean sweep of four wins.
Undoubtably the race of the day was the Rotax final, where pole starter Kevin King was pressured throughout by first Alex Green, then James Pardon, then Green again as Pardon seemed to make a fatal error on lap 8. Undeterred Pardon fought back to pass Green on the final lap, then snatch victory on the line, getting it by less than a nose from a disappointed King, who thought he'd held on.
