Lakeside Karting - Pro Kart Endurance Championship
Round 5 - 30th August 2003 - Lakeside Kart Circuit

Another good turn out with 15 teams entered the split approx 50/50 Pro/Clubman. Fine weather for the 5th round in the series and what a fascinating battle we witnessed. Nail biting stuff all the way; the win could have gone the way of any of the top 3 teams. Notable absentees we’re CDL Racing; apparently racing TVR’s at some circuit in Belgium going by the name Spa Francorchamps. Feeble excuse!

Pro qualifying went the way of Cooch pipping FAB by just 2/100ths of a second to claim pole. J+G 3rd holding Teamtec out by 1/1000th of a second! Stormy Normans the only other team in the 38’s rounded out the top 5. Clubman pole for new boys SD Racing just 1/10th up on GT Motors & NF Racing a further 1/10th back in 3rd. Looking good for some very close racing in both classes. Unfortunately a recurring injury to one of the Lynx drivers led to an early bath & a blown motor sidelined Champs stalwarts Westco2. We hope to see them back at the next round.

Rolling start of 2 laps behind the pace Thunderkart and the pattern set for the rest for the race with Cooch, FAB and Teamtec dominating the front. J+G, looking good in qualifying had a coming together on just the 2nd lap bending a track rod, which would haunt them for the rest of the race.

Half an hour in with 45 laps completed & just half a second separated 1st to 3rd. Most unlike F1 and not processional with a number of position changes & all 3 looking very racy. The fantastic early pace meant all 3 had lapped everyone up to Westco1 in 4th just holding on 16 seconds back. Teamworks 5th only seconds ahead of Stormy Normans. Clubman led by SD Racing with GT Motors 3 seconds back. One lap back SR Racing 3rd but pushed hard by BDC. Early promise shown by NF racing hampered again by a recurrence of their brake problems.

An hour gone and Cooch maintain the slenderest of leads with Teamtec now 2nd having got the jump at 40 mins on FAB just 2.5 secs adrift in 3rd. Although it appears on paper Cooch we’re controlling the race, FAB we’re leading at the 50 min mark. Couldn’t tear ourselves away to eat in race control; starvation was a small price to pay! Westco1 a lap back in a lonely 4th. Battle on a lap back with Teamworks in 5th just 5 secs ahead of Stormy. SD Racing pulled out a lead in Clubman half a lap ahead of GT. BDC jump ahead of SR but only a 3 second gap.

Half way point and the lead 3 hadn’t made a stop. Cooch lead a second ahead of Teamtec. FAB comfortable in 3rd 4 seconds adrift. Westco1 in 4th having stopped with Stormy in 5th just a second ahead of Teamworks both yet to stop. BDC grab the Clubman lead again through others pitting. GT, 20 secs back get the jump on SD Racing to stay 2nd in class. The final hour and FAB make a great stop to lead Cooch. Teamtec in close attendance in 3rd with Westco1 2 laps back in 4th. Stormy Normans a lap back in 5th. Leading Clubman team GT Motors having a great run in 6th as Teamworks fall foul of an engine problem dropping them to 7th. SD Racing 2nd in Clubman with BDC losing a number of laps in 3rd just 5 secs up on SR Racing.

Thirty mins to run and the positions change again with Cooch leading once more but Teamtec pressing very hard. The race had turned into a sprint with neither team taking any prisoners in traffic. FAB unfortuanately lost the lead just before the 30 minute mark avoiding a spinning kart. SD Racing get a lap back on GT but remain a lap down as 2nd placed Clubman team. SR Racing up to 3rd.

The race went right down to the wire with Cooch finally getting a very well deserved win. Teamtec’s great effort put them 2nd just 4 secs adrift with Championship leaders FAB 5 seconds back in 3rd. Westco1 with a good run to 4th and Stormy Normans just a lap back in 5th. Teamworks a commendable 6th despite Dale suffering what’s thought to be a broken rib during the race. Tough lot us karters! GT Motors get the Clubman win despite SD Racing getting back onto the same lap. SR Racing 3rd with BDC 4th.
