The 2005 Pro Kart Endurance Championship

The 2005 Pro Kart Endurance Championship
Round 2 - 17th April 2005 - Daytona Milton Keynes

A dry track and a spring-like morning, greeted another massive grid for this, the second round of the championship. With the return of two more SuperPro teams, namely Team X and So-Co, the level of competition would prove to be even tougher than Round 1.

Autotekk took the pole in qualifying from Baron Racing, with rising stars, Sin Racing along with Lucas Racing making up the second row. Surprise results from Pogue Mahone, Team Velocity and Wildcats relegated some of the SuperPro teams as far down as 10th place on the grid.

After a tidy start, Autotekk took up the running from Baron and Sin, followed by Lucas, Pogue Mahone and Team X. As the race settled down Autotekk, Sin and Lucas pulled out a 15 second gap from the pursuing pack led by Team X and Baron Racing who had moved up to 5th place. With one hour of racing completed Team X had moved up to 3rd place but were still 15 seconds adrift of the leading pair Autotekk and Sin. Baron pitted early for their first fuel stop moving Team X up into 2nd place and Focus Racing moved up into a creditable 3rd followed by David Bright Racing and Eau Rouge.

Autotekk - Pole

When the entire field had refuelled, the leader board now read Autotekk from Team X by 17 seconds, Sin Racing a further 8 seconds adrift, then Baron Racing, Lucas Racing, Pogue Mahone, Kartoon, David Bright Racing, Focus with Eau Rouge making up the top ten. The Clubman teams were putting on an excellent performance with Team Velocity and Westco in 11th and 12th places and Wildcats just behind in 14th place.

With half race distance completed, Team X were now only 10 seconds behind the leaders Autotekk and Baron moved into 3rd in front of Sin with all four teams still on the same lap. On lap 187 Team X took the lead and started to pulled out a gap from Autotekk as the four hour mark approached. Sin and Baron were still fighting over 3rd place with Focus and Lucas making up the top six.

During the course of the next 45 minutes the gap between the two contenders went up and down from between 5 and 15 seconds until Autotekk pitted for their last fuel stop with one hour to go. With half an hour to go Team X made their last stop and rejoined the race just 10 seconds in front of Autotekk with Baron Racing now a clear 3rd and still on the same lap as the leaders. As the seconds ticked down, the gap between 1st and 2nd was reducing at the rate of about half a second a lap. With 15 minutes to go Autotekk were just over 6 seconds behind Team X and still gaining. With the traffic playing a significant part in this unfolding drama, Autotekk now had Team X clearly in their sights, but were rapidly running out of laps. As the last lap signal was given, these two had a clear run to the flag but as they crossed the line Team X managed to hang on to their lead by a mere 1.5 seconds.

1st Team X & 2nd Autotekk Cross the Finish

Baron Racing finished just 32 seconds behind, to take the last podium place, Sin Racing took the Pro Class honours and Westco took the Clubman honours with a very creditable 9th place overall.

With all the karts now in parc ferme, it became apparent that Team X would not have made another lap, as the tank was completely dry with air bubbles half way down the fuel line. Five karts from the parc ferme area were picked out for a particularly stringent engine regulation check. MSA scrutineer, Kelvin Nicholls, reported back that after stripping these engines completely, even down to the inspection and measurement of the piston rings, that all teams were in compliance with the regulations ensuring the continuance of the level playing field, which this championship enjoys.
