The 2005 Pro Kart Endurance Championship

The 2005 Pro Kart Endurance Championship
Round 3 - 15th May 2005 - Daytona Sandown Park

A packed grid and glorious sunshine set the scene for Round 3 of the championship. The Super-Pro Class occupied 7 of the 8 top places in qualifying, with Lucas Racing and Baron Racing on the front row with David Bright Racing and Autotekk making up row 2.

With the drop of the green flag, Lucas Racing took up the lead with David Bright Racing moving rapidly up into 2nd place. Baron Racing slotted into 3rd followed by Jerkyboyz, Focus, Sin Racing, Autotekk and Kartoon. With half an hours racing completed, DBR moved into the lead from Baron and Sin, with Pro-Class runners Focus in a more than creditable 5th place. As the first fuel window approach, a number of front running teams decided to pit early, jumbling up the leader board but regardless the Pro-Class team of Appliance and Clubman team, 15 Degrees North were showing good form just outside the top ten.

With every one refuelled, DBR took up the lead once again, this time with Baron latched on their rear bumper. Lucas and Autotekk were a further 10 seconds adrift and Sin and Kartoon another 26 second behind them.

Focus and 15DN who were doing so well, both suffered terminal failures and dropped to the back of the field whilst Teamtec and Lost Boys were having an equally torrid day.

At the half way stage things started to change as the second of the three mandatory fuel stops started taking effect. First of all Baron took the lead and then Autotekk took up the running with Lucas in 3rd place followed by DBR, Sin, Kartoon, Jerkyboyz, So-Co and www.modelworlduk.com making up the top 10. Autotekk started to build up a lead and with an hour and a half to run, they were now a lap clear of Lucas and Sin. These two then pitted for fuel allowing Baron back up into 2nd place but still the best part of a lap adrift of the leaders, Autotekk.

When all the teams had completed their final fuel stop, it was now a clear run to the flag for the last hour and a bit. Autotekk were still 30 seconds clear of Baron and Sin with Lucas, Kartoon, DBR and Jerkyboyz, scrapping over 4th place. With just over half an hour to go, Baron had reduced their deficit to just 16 seconds and were lapping fractionally faster than the leaders. 15 minutes later the gap was down to 8 seconds and both teams were encountering heavy traffic with the back markers all fighting their own individual battles. With just a few laps to go DBR’s left hand engine started to splutter, bringing out a yellow flag as their kart ground to a halt, dropping them down to an eventual 11th place. Baron now had Autotekk just yards in front of them as the last lapboard was shown. Baron Racing lunged past two back markers to latch on to the rear bumper of Autotekk and then with just few corners to go, dived down the inside of the leaders to steal victory by just 0.52 seconds.

Sin Racing finished in a creditably 3rd place, just 40 seconds behind, with Misfits taking the Pro-Class honours and PDQ the Clubman honours, to conclude a thrilling days racing which was typified by the total absence of a single yellow flag due to driver incidents.
