The 2005 Pro Kart Endurance Championship

The 2005 Pro Kart Endurance Championship
Round 4 - 5th June 2005 - Daytona Milton Keynes

Another packed grid and the obligatory dry conditions, set the scene for round 4 of the championship with rising tensions as the fight for class supremacy intensifies.

DXI-Sin put their kart on pole from their championship rivals, Lucas Racing, with Baron Racing and David Bright Racing making up the second row. Championship leaders Autotekk could only manage 5th place, with Focus alongside flying the flag for the pro-class.

As the race settled down, DXI-Sin and Lucas took up the running, Focus moved into 3rd place in front of DBR and Baron and the other super-pro teams of Kartoon and Autotekk were tucked in just behind. At the end of the first hour Lucas and DXI-Sin were swapping places for the lead, 12 seconds clear of Focus and DBR who were in turn 12 seconds clear of the pursuing bunch led by Baron.

At the other end of the leader board, Spectrum sheared an axle which left them in the pits for over an hour and both CJV and PDQ were also forced to make long unscheduled pit stops, effectively putting them out of contention. As the teams entered the first fuel-stop window Lucas took up the lead from DXI-Sin, with Baron moving up to 3rd place just in front of Focus. Kartoon had moved up to 5th place and So-Co entered the top six for the first time.

Clubmans Chase

At half race distance, Lucas and DXI-Sin were almost a lap clear of their pursuers, Focus were still flying the flag for the pro-class from Teamtec in 7th and Velocity in 10th, with Westco and Teamworx fighting for the clubman lead in a very respectable 12th and 13th positions respectively.

With the second of the three fuel stops completed, seven of the top eight places were now occupied by super-pro teams, with the exception of Focus who were having an exceptional day laying in 4th place overall. Proceedings were then brought to a halt when Appliance managed to invert their kart bringing out the red flag. Fortunately the injuries were only minor and the race restarted shortly afterwards, line astern behind race leaders DXI-Sin.

Focus and DBR had now moved up to 3rd and 4th places respectively but still had a final fuel stop to make, whilst DXI-Sin and Lucas were still fighting for the lead with less than 1 hour to go. Kartoon were cruelly thrown out of contention with a snapped chassis and So-Co blew an engine knocking both these super-pro teams out of the top ten. Baron were then forced to pit twice with a chain guard problem leaving DXI-Sin and Lucas in a two horse race for the lead, but dropping them back into the clutches of the pursuing DBR team.

Midfield Action

A peculiar turn of fate left Baron in a predicament as the chequered flag loomed even closer. Lucas were leading DXI-Sin by two kart lengths, but Baron found themselves in between these two, with no intention of easing up and falling back into the clutches of DBR. Four laps from the end Baron put a move on Lucas, which gave opportunity for DXI-Sin to nip past both of them. Baron then tried to regain track position from DXI-Sin, making it extremely difficult for Lucas to get back on DXI-Sin’s rear bumper. One lap from the end Lucas managed to pass Baron but as they raced for the flag, DXI-Sin managed to hold off Lucas Racing by 0.4 of a second with Baron Racing latched on to their rear bumper, albeit not on the same lap. Focus upheld the pro-class honours with an excellent 6th place overall, but only just from Teamtec and Misfits, with Roadrunner Racing taking the clubman honours from Westco and Rogue Racing.

After four rounds of the championship, there have been four different winners and the championship standings could not be closer. With the next round being held at Buckmore Park, unfamiliar territory from some teams, will any of the front-runners be able to stamp their authority on this series?
