The 2005 Pro Kart Endurance Championship

The 2005 Pro Kart Endurance Championship
Round 5 - 26th June 2005 - Buckmore Park

The championship moved on to Buckmore Park for round 5 and over 40 karts lined up for the start, in glorious sunshine.

So-Co took the pole from joint championship leaders Lucas Racing, whilst Baron Racing and Focus made up the 2nd row. The super-pro teams of DXI-Sin and Autotekk qualified in 5th and 12th places respectfully, with Roadrunner Racing flying the clubman’s flag by qualifying in an exceptional 8th place.

As the lights turned green So-Co led the field into the first corner followed by Lucas, Baron, DXI-Sin and Autotekk who moved up into 5th having qualified down in 12th place. With all the super-pro teams at the head of the field, Team Velocity, Focus and SZR were the leading pro-class teams, with PDQ putting in a stanch performance for the clubman class.

Within half an hour of the start So-Co had pulled out a 15 second lead over the ensuing pack and in the hands of Sean Durcan, had broken the lap record with a stunning 45.371-second lap. At the one-hour mark So-Co were now almost a lap clear of Lucas followed by DXI-Sin, Baron and Autotekk, with Focus now heading the pro-class from SZR, Velocity and Team BAR.

As the first fuel stop approached, Lucas pitted early moving DXI-Sin up to 2nd place and although the first five places were still on the same lap, So-Co were very nearly a lap clear of 2nd place.

With the first fuel stop completed it was service as normal with So-Co leading from Lucas, DXI-Sin, Baron and Autotekk, but with their lead was now reduced to just 12 seconds after a slow stop.

As the half way stage approached, 2nd to 5th places changed constantly with the array of different fuel strategies and So-Co’s lead was now reduced to just 6 seconds from the hard charging Lucas team. The pro-class fight was still being won by Focus from Team BAR and Misfits, with DXI-Wild flying the clubman’s flag in an exceptional 9th place overall.

With the second fuel stop completed, the race order was now, So-Co from Lucas by 10 seconds from DXI-Sin, Baron and Autotekk and pro-class team of Focus were now one lap clear of Team BAR in 6th place overall.

Over the course of the next hour the gap between the two lead karts remained constant and as everyone came in to complete the last of their fuel stops, it was set for a close race to the flag. During the next hour, Lucas slowly chipped away at So-Co’s lead and with 50 minutes to go we had a new leader. Lucas then proceeded to edge away from So-Co in a charge for the flag, whilst So-Co were coming under increasing pressure from a fast finishing DXI-Sin.

As Lucas cruised home to take the win, DXI-Sin managed to nip past So-Co in the in-field traffic to steal second place and Focus took the Pro class honours with DXI-Wild securing the clubman win.

Intensive post race scrutineering, by the MSA official, Kelvin Nicholls concluded that all engines were compliant with technical regulations and a great days racing was brought to a close when Buckmore Park’s principal, Bill Sisley joined the presentation party.
