The 2005 Pro Kart Endurance Championship

The 2005 Pro Kart Endurance Championship
Round 6 - 17th July 2005 - Sandown Park

Round 6 saw another full grid of 40 karts and would prove to be a race of attrition. Even before the start of the race, temperatures had risen to nearly 30°C and both drivers and karts would suffer accordingly. By the time the race would finish, nearly ten teams were forced into retirement or at least semi retirement, including three from the super-pro class.

Autotekk qualified on pole from Lucas Racing, with AJB and pro-class team, Team Velocity making up the second row. These four qualified within one tenth of a second of each other, with the top 30 all qualifying within a second of the pole time.

After a clean start Autotekk, Lucas and AJB pulled away from the ensuing pack, led by DXI-Sin with Team Velocity, Kartoon and Pogue Mahone in close attendance. After an hour of racing, the top three were still nose to tail with Velocity now in 4th place some 11 seconds behind with DXI-Sin a further 4 seconds adrift. At this point, two super-pro teams, So-Co and Jerkyboyz had already made unscheduled stops to the pits, as had World Thunder, Rogue Racing and Farnham Foxes all with heat related mechanical problems.

At quarter distance, Lucas pitted early as usual, rejoining in 7th place, leaving Autotekk and AJB now well clear of Velocity in 3rd place. As the leader-board settled down after the first re-fuel window, it was service as normal with Autotekk from Lucas and AJB all within 10 seconds of each other and now almost a lap clear of Velocity in 4th place. DXI-Sin were still in the hunt in 5th place just in front of Kartoon, Pogue Mahone, Spectrum, Misfits and Appliance making up the top ten.

At the half way stage, Autotekk and Lucas were just 1 second apart and 20 seconds clear of AJB in 3rd place. Three more retirements had taken place namely, Pulse TGSR, Lost Boys and Teamtec, with a number of other teams now 20 or so laps off the leaders due to lengthy pit stops. Potential podium placed AJB were the next casualty with a heat related engine problem and 15DN similarly announced their retirement.

With the second of the three mandatory fuel stops completed, Autotekk and Lucas were the two-horse race, with Pogue Mahone, DXI-Sin, Velocity and Kartoon all on the same lap and fighting for the last podium place. PDQ and Teamworx headed the clubman class in an excellent 11th and 12th place respectively and CJV joined the retirements.

As the teams completed their last stop, Autotekk and Lucas were just 16 seconds apart and sprinting for the flag, whilst DXI-Sin had got the better of Pogue on a pit stop and were now in 3rd place. With less than an hour to go, Autotekk started to stretch their lead over Lucas and looked set for the win, whilst Pogue Mahone were slowly catching DXI-Sin. With the chequered flag in sight, Autotekk took the win from Lucas by 31 seconds and the fast finishing Pogue Mahone just failed to catch DXI-Sin who snatched the last podium place.

Pogue Mahone, who finished in an excellent overall 4th place, also took the pro-class honours from Team Velocity and PDQ were top clubman team with their best result of the season.
