Round 2 - 26th March 2006 - Glan y Gors

Round 2 was subject to the vagaries of the Snowdonian Mountain weather with driving rain and a backdrop of beautiful and dramatic scenery.

Wet qualifying gave Lucas Racing the pole from Team X, with RPM Bad Boys and AJB1 making up the second row. Pro-Sport were the quickest of the Pro Class qualifiers in 7th place with RoadRunner flying the Clubman flag in 17th place.

From the plumes of spray, AJB1 immerged as leader of the pack from Lucas Racing and Baron Racing who had moved up into 3rd place. With 40 minutes gone, AJB1 still held the lead with Baron now in 2nd place followed by Lucas Racing, Team Alpha, RPM Bad Boys and Team X making up the top six. NRG, Prosport and Focus were leading Pro-class contenders with RoadRunner in 15th place overall, leading the Clubman class.

First of the front runners to incur a problem were RPM Bad Boys, whose unscheduled stop dropped them to 27th place, whilst the top three on the leader board, were covered by just 9 seconds. Just prior to the first fuel stop window, a dry line started to appear, enhanced by an apparent break in the weather and a strengthening wind. One by one the teams pitted and slicks were now the order of the day. With the 2-hour mark now behind them, Lucas Racing emerged as leaders by 3 seconds from AJB1, with Team X and Team Alpha in close attendance.

At this point, the teams were now putting in their fastest laps of the day, on an increasingly drying track with AJB1 achieving a 49.6 second lap, the fastest of the day. Then as quickly as it disappeared, the rain returned with a vengeance, catching the teams mid-way between scheduled fuel stops and forcing many of them to pit just for wet tyres. Subsequently Team X now headed the field from Team Alpha, AJB1, Lucas Racing and Baron Racing. Staff Bulls led the Pro-Class from Modelworld and Teamworx headed the Clubman class in a creditably 15th position.

The rain went from wet to wetter and many teams who had abused their wet tyres earlier in the race, were now struggling with laying water on the track resulting in a serious lack of grip. As the last of the scheduled stops approached, AJB1 emerged in front of Team X and Lucas Racing, but there was little to choose between these top three.

With an hour and a half to go, Lucas Racing now led AJB1 by just a few seconds followed by Team Alpha, Team X, Baron Racing and RPM Bad Boys, who had made a remarkable recovery from the lower end of the field.

After all the leading teams had pitted with the exception of Lucas Racing, the 2 lap advantage which they had maintained, was quickly negated when they made their last stop and emerged in 2nd place just behind Team Alpha. In the closing stages of the race, Team Lucas were able to push harder than anyone else, regaining their lead and pulling away from Team Alpha and AJB1. With the top finishing positions looking like they were set in stone, the last few minutes of the race proved quite dramatic. Some teams were forced to splash and dash, the leaders lost a front bumper and nose cone and Baron Racing ran out of fuel. Regardless Lucas Racing pitted to rectify the damage and emerged as race winners from Team Alpha and AJB1, Team X just made the last stint without refuelling to finish 4th whilst Baron Racing finished the race stationary but were still recorded as 5th in front of RPM Bad Boys.

Prosport, Focus and Modelworld came in a creditable 7th, 8th and 9th respectively to take the Pro-class honours, whilst SD Racing just pipped Sonic Deaf Monkeys to take 14th place overall, giving them the Clubman class win.

Although the teams were wet and cold, the conditions had invoked some racing of the highest standard, with strategy proving paramount over outright speed. The beautifully, welcoming and challenging circuit of GYG, had provided a race venue which will be a hard act to follow, as the circus moves on to Whilton Mill for Round 3.
