UK Pro Kart Endurance Championship
Round 3 - 16th April 2006 - Whilton Mill

Whilton Mill provided several short sharp showers for round 3 of the championship, which on a predominately dry day, caught out even many of the top teams in spectacular fashion.

Qualifying went the way of Team Alpha from AJB1, with DXI-Sin and Pro-Class front-runners NGR, making up the front row.

After a clean start, an early mid-field incident put paid to the chances of SZR, PDQ, Liebherr Demons and Prosport who now trailed the field in 37th place. Meanwhile AJB1 took up the lead from Team X, Team Alpha, DXI-Sin and NGR, with RPM Bad Boys making up the top half dozen.

One hour completed and the lead group were inseparable with Team Alpha, DXI-Sin and AJB1, all taking turns to lead the race. The first of the short showers arrived, sending karts off at all angles, but the rain had insufficient longevity to warrant a change to wet tyres.

The track quickly dried and the first of the ‘big guns’ hit problems when AJB1’s fuel tank split, causing them to run out of fuel and banished them to mid-field.

With the first of the mandatory fuel stops completed, Team Alpha still led from DXI-Sin and Team X, with Team BAR moving up into an impressive 4th place and leading the pro-class contenders. The super-pro teams of Autotekk, RPM Bad Boys and Baron Racing were all still on the same lap and not far behind the flying Team BAR.

With most teams having completed their second fuel stop, Autotekk then dropped off the leader board with mechanical problems, leaving Team Alpha leading from DXI-Sin, Team BAR, Team X and RPM Bad Boys.

With less than 2 hours to go another quick shower caused havoc, but passed quickly enough for the teams to stay on slicks, albeit with many drivers improving their off road techniques. With just 1 hour remaining, Team Alpha still led, but DXI-Sin, Team X and Baron Racing were still on the same lap as the leaders and starting to close. Team BAR were still leading the pro-class runners by a mile, whilst Rogue Racing were leading the clubman class in 11th place overall, with now just 30 minutes of racing remaining.

In the final stages of the race, DXI-Sin proved to be the fastest finishers and had reduced the gap to just 7 seconds behind Team Alpha with only 15 minutes remaining.

With the chequered flag in sight, Team Alpha took the win by just 4 seconds from DXI-Sin, with Team X taking the last podium place.

Team Alpha now lead the championship as the teams head to round 4 at Buckmore Park, with a confirmed maximum grid of 45 teams. Now that will be a spectacle!
