UK Pro Kart Endurance Championship
Round 5 - 4th June 2006 - Bayford Meadows

Bayford Meadow was bathed in glorious sunshine for this the 5th round of the championship.

AJB1 narrowly took the pole from Team Alpha, with Frascati Racing and Autotekk making up the second row. Frascati Racing, being the only non super-pro team in the top six of the qualifiers, would prove to be the dark horse of the day, as this track was not only their home circuit, but they currently held the track’s lap record.

The start was uncharacteristically a complete disaster. A midfield spinner on the warm up lap collected Rogue Racing, breaking their front stub and forcing them to pit even before the race had started. One lap into the successful race start, saw about five karts vying for the same piece of tarmac and Spectrum Racing ended up upside down, bringing out the red flag.

Once the race had settled down, AJB1 led the field from Frascati, Team Alpha, DXI-Sin, Team X and Baron Racing making up the top six. Front-runners Autotekk were slipping progressively down the field with an obvious mechanical problem, which eventually caused them to pit and effectively put paid to their day. In fact the super-pro teams were having a bad day all round, with RPM Bad Boys cracking a chassis and Baron Racing then losing both engines leaving three of the top runners in 30th place and downwards.

Meanwhile, Frascati had stolen the lead from AJB1 and Lucas Racing joined the top six with less than 20 seconds covering this group after an hour and a half of racing.

After the first of the three mandatory fuel stops, Team X emerged as leaders from AJB1 followed by Alpha, Frascati, Lucas Racing and modelworlduk.com who became the second pro-class team to break into the top six. Roadrunner led Liebherr Demons in the clubman class in a more than creditable 9th place overall.

With half race distance now completed Team X continued to extend their lead whilst a titanic battle for 9th place between the pro-class teams of, Westco, Teamtec, Focus, NGR, MWC Installations and AJB2 continued to rage with only seconds between 9th and 14th place.

After the second fuel stop Team X started to increase their lead over AJB1 who were closely followed by Frascati and Lucas, with DXI-Sin moving up into 5th place. These places remained largely unchanged, right up to the final splash and dash for fuel, in the last hour of the race.

Team X emerged with a lap and a bit clear of AJB1, who now had Frascati Racing, literally hanging on their rear bumper in the race to the flag. To compound the situation, Team Alpha who were in 6th place and chasing down DXI-Sin in 5th place, started to find some real pace in the closing stages. Although a lap down on the AJB1/Frascati battle, they caught this pair and split them making Frascati’s bid for 2nd place even more difficult.

With the chequered flag in sight, Team X cruised to victory, whilst AJB1 just took 2nd place from Frascati with Team Alpha sandwiched between them as they crossed the line. Modelworlduk.com and NGR made up the remaining pro-class podium places, just displacing Teamtec and Roadrunner clinched the clubman honours from Cosport and DXI-Wild.

To concluded a terrific days racing, presentation was just completed before a rogue shower drifted in over a very hospitable Bayford Meadow. Round 6 of the championship moves on to Milton Keynes, with the championship points table, just getting tighter and tighter at the top.
