RAFMSA Karting Championship
Round 3 - Little Rissington - July 2006

The annual RAFMSA Individual Kart championship incorporating round 3 of the PAX Insurance assisted RAFMSA Championship 2006 was held at Little Rissington in July. This event is the highlight of the year with double winnings, kindly donated by Harm Schuurman UK, up for grabs.

Drivers from all over country, even as far afield as the Channel Islands, came to compete at this fast, sweeping circuit.

The Saturday practice session saw some of the best weather this year with the temperatures reaching 32 degrees for most of the day.

So far this year, there has been a mixed grid of engines and this event was no different. With at least 7 engine types on the grid, Rotax Max, IAME Leopard, P.R.D. Fireball, Vortex and various older 100cc reed valve engines, the action was always going to be fast and furious. The good weather continued on Sunday. The blazing hot track provided an excellent surface for Nez Ross to take the lead for a couple of laps in the first heat until Phil Hill reeled him in and passed him on the inside. Marcus Ramsden caught up and negotiated Ross but just clipped his front wheel against Ross’s rear bumper ending Ross’s race. Ramsden finished second behind Hill. Liam Britton clashed with the hard-pushing Ramsden early on in the second heat, leaving the door open for David Hole with his PRD Fireball to finish behind Ashley Prime on a Rotax. Phil Hill expertly steered his Leopard engine to his second win of the day. Phil completed his hat-trick in the third heat, followed by Liam Britton in an old 100cc reed valve engine. Ashley Prime finished third. With 3 heat wins, Phil Hill took pole for the final. Good, consistent drives saw Prime, Beer and Hole line up behind him. As the lights turned to green Phil Hill stormed off leaving the rest of the pack to fight it out for second place. Prime, Bourne and Beer fought tooth and nail, trading places on several occasions with Prime winning the battle to finish second, and Bourne pipping Beer on the line by just 1/10th of a second for third.

The drive of the day went to Phil Hill who was simply unstoppable. Ex-RAF Champion karter Wally Pape presented the trophies. A special presentation of the Wally Pape trophy first awarded in 1976 was made to Kev Banner as the best novice.

The drivers would like to extend thanks to the staff of Rissington Kart Club for all the help and excellent support during the weekend.

1st Phil Hill Interpid/Leopard
2nd Ashley Prime Tony/Rotax
3rd Luke Bourne Tony/Rotax

Ashley Prime, Pete Beer and David Hole finished first, second and third respectively in the RAFMSA individual championship.
