It depends what you think you are going to do.

If it's just a kart of roughly the same power as your son's, so that you know what he is talking about when he describes a problem, then you have a choice of rotax/ formula blue.

(I discount TKM because the chassis set up is so different, not because it is 'lesser' is any way).

If it's possible that you will want to race but still be close in performance to your son, then Formula Blue at Tatershall. Depending on your son's ability, you may be too busy to do more than race a one circuit. Blue has the advantage of weight /power handicapping and generally seems to be less aggressive in its style than Rotax. (Possibly because a Rotax doesn't slide as much, so mistakes aren't so apparent and faster karts pile up behind slower karts but cannot get past without a little, illegal, shove)

If you aren't interested in being close in performance, then gearbox....though I am suspicious of any claim in any class that there is no or little maintenance for a racing machine. Noting that Front brakes so totally alters the driving technique that there is little similarity between what your son may describe and what you will experience. If you have gone gearbox almost from the start, then you won't understand teh differences, while those who get to gearbox after other classes have experience to compare it with. (You don't drive your car like a kart, for example).

However, as for Blues not being raced at other circuits, you may be the driver needed to tip the scale. I know of a track in the South that may get a new Junior Blue grid because there are now several JB's in the area, none of whom realised the others lived nearby. (They had the karts for fun, now they realise they could be 'racing').
