It does sound like you need guiding hand, you will often be told well intended but more too often miss-guided advice on kart setup, gearing the right line your driver should be taking.

If you can get to Shenington or whilton mill, you won't go wrong with Kart Coach run by Alex and Michael Gatton, Michael will SHOW you the fundamentals of kart setup and his son Alex will work wonders with your son, believe me it works! I was in the exact same position as you!
