Hi Simon,
I concede the LH analogy may not be the best, but it still holds true for most of the top drivers. Talent was the stepping stone and money became the bridge afterwards. You are correct that a lot of money is spent on the drivers once they are picked up by the teams, but i dont beleive that that is what most people are referring to when they are discussing money in the forums. The comments are normally referring to clubby drivers that beleive that anyone in front of them must be spending more money.
I would like to think that we all accept(even if somewhat begrudgingly) that the national championships are going to be a large budget series. And in essense would we want it any other way. The S1 for example is supposed to be the epitome of kart driving and pinnacle of a drivers career. It should be a showcase for the best drivers the country has to offer and a such is going to attract the interest of sponsors etc as results sell karts. This in turn breeds interest from the media whih in turn will hopefully bring new people into the sport. Its all driven by money and to beleive it can be any other way is naive. There has to be a vested interest surely for the larger team backed by manufacturers to get involved.
I think that to even enter the S1 series (or equivelant) there should be qualification rounds which determine which drivers are eligible to drive. That way the better drivers who dont possibly have the financial backing of families will have more chance of financial aid from the teams. It will also ensure that the dads with enormous cheque books are not able to steam roller their way into what should really be a showcase of driving talent. As i am not involved with karting further up the hierarchy I would be interested to know if possibly the daddy money that keeps some of the teams going??
Again, the way I interpreted the green paper was that this was one of the points to be discussed and to honest I welcome it.
I know that some parents pay for tutors etc, but does this effect me as a clubby? Surely this is only at a significantly higher level and not really relevant to 90% of the foums subscribers?
cheers
Paul
