You can get the covers on and off about three time if you're careful.
It's best to get both off so that you can remove all the grease and grit.
You could try washing in petrol and then squeezing grese in the gap with your finger on both sides.
Spin the bearings (NOT WITH AN AIRLINE) and the grit will tend to get attached to the cage from the balls and go silent.
I'm not that in favour of oil, especially WD40, as it isn't the designed lubricant for the bearing.
You can get three new 50mm bearings for £21.00 on ebay and I suppose that's quite good value seeing as they're a disposable item.
I've seen three for as low as £16.00.
