Don't forget to take into account that 30mm axles tend to be solid whereas 50mm axle tend to be hollow (I believe).

Also, don't forget to allow that, while calculating deflection, it's not the distance to the hub that matters but to the distance to the tyre matters. I'd treat the tyre as an imaginary disk at the centre cross-section of the tyre.

Finally, I'd love to hear your figures for the deflection of the axle when compared to the type of steel being used in the construction of 'hard' and 'soft' axles. I have a feeling I already know that rough details!
