Just to add some mud to the waters I personally do not use a rib protector as they make me feel quite uncomfortable in the kart despite having tried both the P1 and Sparco types. Whilst the P1 was quite good I found, as previously said in this thread a lack of feedback feel from the kart.
Having said that I do not use a protector I have suffered some rib damage this season in what was a sizable shunt backwards into an immovable object which caused the damage through the RH rear seat stay. The likelihood is that I would have suffered a very similar injury even with a protector as there was no give from the seat during the impact because of the stay, so the load would still have been transferred to my rib cage in the same manner.
The best way I have found of avoiding injury is to have a seat that fits you properly and avoid the kerbs, OOPS! that's another argument that has already run and run here, so forget I said that! Did anyone mention kerbs? surely not!
