Ross,

In my view you shouldn't cut them (save for trimming off the lugs i mentioned before). For the sake of an hour's work i would take out the axle and slip off the bearings and carriers such that the protectors are whole. That way you don't have any weak spots or raised edges that may catch the chain or kerb.

Granted I have cut these things in the past for speed, however, I have experience of a loose chain getting caught on the cut which got broken on a kerb resulting in a dnf. this is what these things are supposed to stop!!
