Safety has little to do with it, it's purely for the satisfaction of bureacracy. I have two 18 month old helmets in perfect condition. I could wear them next year to race Superbikes, but not in a kart. My sons can wear them on December 31st, but on January 1st they suddenly become unsafe for karting. That's not safety, it's bureacracy gone mad.
We are led to believe that older helmets might be more dangerous, but if the MSA is so concerned by children’s safety why wasn't the ZIP cadet nose cone banned instantly there was even a suspicion of it being more dangerous.
Isn't that somewhat inconsistant? Even scandalously so?
