The unintended consequence of which is no more cheap chassis. Currently, TKM chassis are limited to a maximum retail price of something like Ł1,200 + VAT. You could get a complete TKM kart, brand new, for something like Ł1,900 + VAT. In allowing CIK chassis to race, I can only assume this price limit will no longer exist. As such, even if the TKM style chassis is quicker, new ones will automatically be as expensive (if not more so) than a CIK one. The only cost saving over Rotax now will be the initial purchase price of the engine as Rotax appear to have got their house in order regarding reliability.

Moreover, there is no current viable second hand market for TKM chassis until the new rules are ratified and raced under. Such drastic changes to the rules should be decided a season in advance so drivers can allow for this.

Personally, I can't see these rules helping TKM survive. To me it looks like a lost cause, which is a shame because, as it stands, it is by far the cheapest formula to race. In my opinion karting as a whole will suffer as a large proportion of those currently racing TKM are doing so because Rotax does not appeal in any way shape or form. The Super One TKM guys may well switch to Rotax; the others will probably leave karting. Some may migrate to Easykart.

We'd all like the benefit of hindsight but, 5-10 years ago, instead of Extreme, TKM should have launched a 125cc Air-Cooled TaG engine, like the Easykart, racing under similar rules to TKM Extreme today. The Juniors could have raced the 100cc version with clutches, with the TaG engine coming later. It would have maintained the market for the current engines and allowed existing Seniors the choice of upgrading all their kit and racing Rotax, or upgrading just the engine and staying in TKM.
