Michael you are entering a field that makes karting look cheap!
Take a look around at what the professional sports photographers use and you will find Nikon and Canon are used almost exclusively. The Digital SLR bodies look very similar to the regular ones however most of the hig end stuff have expensive internals and magnesium rether than plastic bodies. The lens too is a very expensive item with professional grade lenses such as the Canon L series costing between £800 to over £4K each.
This said these days you can buy a magnesium bodied Digital SLR with an adequate performance such as a Canon 20D on fleabay for about £200. Again remember yhe quality limits of any image you capture will be dictated by the piece of glass you fit to the front of the camera irrespective of how many millin pixles your digicam claims.
Another factor to think on is the effective frame size offerd by a Digital SLR as most use a smaller image area than the original 35 mm frame size used by film cameras which will further restrict quality limits. The best professional Digital SLR's use a full frame sensor size for best quality.
If you want professional quality from any of your shots I would suggest for motor sport applications you look for a S/hand Canon 5D and a S/hand 70/200 L seies lens which will provide you with a good semi pro full frame camera body and one of the cheaper L series lens range to give crisp opticle quality.
If you would like to know more send me some contact details so we can chat further.
p.s. I spent over 20 years as a professional photographer and I am still a member of the Canon Professional Photographic Society so iI stay intouch!
