Thanks pccsystems, some good suggestions. It sounds to me like the sicky option won't work this year if the MSA is serious.
All in all there is a great deal of people and organisations covering themselves because of Nanny State policy - the MSA insisting on permission to comply with it, and schools being very reluctant to grant permission for fear of being pulled up by inspectors.
I understand the motives behind the policy - cutting down on real truancy and stopping parents abusing the system to take cheap holidays. However, if a child is doing well at school and just a few days then it should be the parent's decision and responsibility.
