Matt you are missing the point. Yes you can measure in the way you decribe but there are too many vairiables. the road car system you have at work does indeed use a similar system however how many cars do yo know of where not only the tracking or toe is abbe to be ajusted but also whe width? Dont forget that using the 'stringing' method you described you would still be able to achieve perfect tracking measurements and TAD (thrust axis deviation) yet still not have the kart correctly aligned due to the fact that all 4 wheels can and frequently are moved in or out on theie axles.
The staring point should be the center line of the chassis relative to the 90 degree angle and centered rear axle. once this is established and set correctly then you can set the rear hub carriers accurately then and only then can you attempt to use the method you described.
Ian or John mentioned the R3 laser system that will do all this for you but it is expensive but used correctly offers an accurate method of establishing that all is square or otherwise! A good example was a chassis I was given to check a couple of years ago proved to have a correctly aligned footprint yet the axle had to be offset by 8mm to achieve this!! Yes it was aligned correctly but the chassis itself had been bent and the 8mm offsetting of the axle corrected the error but this still did not cure the fact that the chassis was bent nordid it cure the hadeling problem caused by the bent chassis but at least it drovein a straight line afterwards!
