Simon, type A and type A/FR are different standards, the type A is the one you can no longer use in karting in the UK, the A/FR lasts another 3 years minimum international and 5 years for the UK, see Crash Helmet Standards (29/03) in the news section.

I'm not sure why whoever it was at the MSA said you'd need a flame resistant balaclava as that is what the F(lame) R(esistant) part of the standard is.
